Full Job Description

As a Senior Magnet Modelling Developer at Tokamak Energy, you will play a key role in the development of advanced magnet modelling capabilities. You will be responsible for creating and refining numerical models to predict the behavior of high temperature superconductor (HTS) magnets used in our fusion devices. Your work will contribute to the optimization and design of magnet systems, helping to ensure their successful operation in our tokamaks.,

  • Work with the magnet modelling team to develop novel internal tools for electromagnetic and thermal modelling and design of HTS coils in MATLAB and Python

  • Help develop internal software engineering processes including CI/CD and documentation

  • Improve existing simulations using compiled languages, GPU and HPC computing

  • Assist the magnet engineering team in developing tools for analysis of experimental data

  • Aid in developing CAD tools for the detailed design of coils to allow consistent analysis between different engineering teams

Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering, physics, maths or software engineering based discipline

  • At least 5 years of experience coding with MATLAB or Python and creating well organized, structured code

  • Experience with compiled languages eg C++ or FORTRAN and massively parallel GPU computing

  • Experience running very large simulations and high performance computing

  • Experience with writing integration and unit tests for code development and/or test-driven development

  • Experience managing a GIT repository and building a CI/CD pipeline

  • Demonstrated ability to write comprehensive reports for a range of stakeholders

  • Demonstrated track record of innovation, creativity and project delivery in a complex research and development environment

  • High degree of self-organisation, motivation, and commitment to working to defined timescales

  • Desirable
  • Demonstrated experience simulating physical systems such as electromagnetics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics or kinetics

  • Understanding of Maxwell's equations and electromagnetic simulation from first-principles

  • Understanding of different numerical methods of electromagnetic simulation and the pros and cons of different approaches

  • Mathematical understanding of ordinary and partial differential equations, different methods required to solve them and the pros and cons of different approaches

What if there was a limitless, safe, clean, low-cost energy source, providing much needed global energy security? What if that energy source could also help reduce climate change? We believe that's fusion energy. Tokamak Energy is a leading global commercial fusion energy company based near Oxford, UK. We are taking established science and building on it by pioneering the use of spherical tokamaks in conjunction with high temperature superconducting magnets.

  • The company, founded in 2009 as a spin-off from the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, currently employs a growing team of over 180 people with talent from the UK and around the world including expert scientific, engineering, industrial and commercial capabilities. The company has more than 55 families of patent applications and has raised over £100m of private investment.

Once realised, fusion energy will be a key enabler for meeting world energy requirements and climate policy goals. Come and be a part of a dynamic and innovative team who are striving to provide a solution to one of humanity's greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all.
