Full Job Description

In Wales we have a policy environment that seeks to create the conditions for good health for all; through legislation such as our Wellbeing of Future Generations Act and a range of other supportive policies along with a commitment to collaborative working across the system. Public Health Wales has recently updated our own Long Term Strategy but there are long term significant challenges to population health and particularly health inequalities. These together provides real opportunity for dynamic and innovative public health leadership across the system., As a Consultant in Public Health in the Health Improvement Division you will work closely with Welsh Government in developing and implementing policy and strategy ensuring that action is based on the best available evidence. You will support the Public Health Directors Leadership Group in Wales in taking forward an expanding joint programme of work; delivering on 'once for Wales' action and acting as a resource to the system enabling local public health team colleagues to deliver.

The Division has a strong commitment to research and development and all Consultants are encouraged to develop a research interest working closely with our academic partners. You will also contribute to training as we also regularly host Public Health Speciality Registrars. We encourage the development of close working relationships with our partner agencies in Ireland, Scotland and England so that we can share experience and learn from each other.

The successful applicants will have demonstrable experience at a senior level and highly developed influencing, negotiation and motivational skills to drive transformational change.

The Division uses a settings-based approach to support delivery of key priorities and has established programmes in pre-schools; schools; higher and further education; workplaces and the NHS. We are particularly looking for someone with an interest in maximising the potential of work and NHS settings to promote health and reduce inequalities.

We are Public Health Wales - the national public health organisation for Wales. Our purpose is 'working together for a healthier Wales'. We exist to help all people in Wales live longer, healthier lives. With our partners, we aim to increase healthy life expectancy, improve health and well-being, and reduce inequalities for everyone in Wales, now and for future generations.

Together, our teams work to prevent disease, protect health, and provide leadership, specialist services and public health expertise. We are the main source of public health information, research and innovation in Wales. Never more has public health been so important as we come through the Coronavirus pandemic, face the challenges of the cost-of-living crisis and tackle and prevent the harmful effects of climate change.

Our organisation is guided by our Values, 'Working together, with trust and respect, to make a difference'. We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace that values equality, diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications which represent the rich diversity of the communities we serve and from those wishing to work part time or on a job share basis.
