A unique and very exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, compassionate and transformational healthcare leader to lead cancer strategy and work with a highly successful, multi - award winning cancer team. The successful applicant will have a wealth of leadership and management experience and will have sound working knowledge of cancer services and national strategy. They be self-driven and motivated, with a passion for improving the experiences of patients with cancer. In return, they will work with dedicated and highly skilled clinical and operation teams to keep MWL at the forefront of cancer care in the region.

The post holder will lead the long-term development of the Trust's strategic vision within Cancer Services and promote excellence in:

  • Performance Management

  • Demand and Capacity Management

  • Leadership, Engagement and Ownership

  • Collection, analysis and use of data

  • Implementation of re-design pathways

  • Workforce development and skill mix


  • Please note that this recruitment process will involve an assessment centre.Assessment centre will be held on Friday 14th June 2024., Specifically, the role will be:
  • To provide an expert voice in Cancer Services specifically around service improvement and transformation, demonstrating an advanced theoretical knowledge base and practical experience to underpin the role.

  • To provide leadership and expertise in the provision of cancer services by facilitating, enabling and supporting the team in the delivery of high-quality evidence based care.

  • To lead the Cancer Services Operational Management Team to ensure there is a vision for the future which meets the Trust objectives and reflects national cancer strategy.

  • To provide expertise in improvement, transformation, performance delivery and collaborative working in a fast-paced environment with competing demands. The post holder will provide expert advice on service development ensuring achievement of the national and local agenda with regard to cancer.

  • To support with the clinical governance, audit and implementation of NICE guidance within the service to support best practice.


  • Team working with Trust Cancer Alliance colleagues to deliver excellence in cancer services.

    Flexible working across MWL sites is required to deliver a responsive service to patients with cancer and their relatives / carers. The work will involve regular effective liaison with multi-professional teams and the ability to advocate on behalf of cancer services with departments both internal and external to the Trust.

    The Secretary of State has approved the partnership between St Helens & Knowsley and Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.

    From 1st July we have come together as a single organisation under the name Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

    The Trust delivers acute hospital care, intermediate care, community, and primary care services to a population of over 600,000 people with a combined workforce of around 9000 dedicated and skilled staff from 17 locations including Whiston, Southport & Formby, St Helens, Ormskirk and Newton hospitals.
