Band 7 Upper Limb Therapist (Occupational or Physiotherapist)

The Hand unit within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham is a regional centre for patients with acute and complex needs and a tertiary centre for peripheral nerve injuries.

We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced senior Upper Limb Therapist (OT or PT) to join our team. You will join a large Upper Limb team to assist in the delivery of high-quality care. You will be responsible treating a range of interesting and complex upper limb patients, including hand, elbow and nerve trauma, post-operative rehab and have opportunity to gain experience in clinical sub specialists (major trauma, sports rehabilitation, rheumatology, emergency medicine, research)

The post will be based within our Upper Limb rehabilitation department with a supportive team of specialist Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy assistants. You will work within MDT upper limb trauma clinics alongside surgeons, in addition to elective clinics run at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital nearby.

You must have experience in a variety of hand / upper limb injuries and conditions and have good splinting skills.

• To appropriately manage a clinical caseload within outpatients and take a lead role in the specialist assessment and treatment of patients who have a diverse and complex range of upper limb trauma and conditions in order to determine clinical diagnosis and treatment needs and to maintain associated records as an autonomous practitioner.


• To be responsible for team performance and to work with the clinical team to deliver a high standard of safe clinical care to this specialty and to achieve service and team KPIs.


• The post holder provides line management for qualified and support staff on a day to day basis across the Upper limb service at QEHB and ROH and provides skilled leadership to that team. This includes responsibility for operational management, performance management, staff development, appraisal, team development, implementation of policy and policy changes in own clinical area and to set and monitor standards of practice.


• To undertake and support specific work streams as directed by lead clinicians in this specialty area.


• To participate in service remodelling within the Upper Limb Service in order to improve the patient's clinical pathway.
  
  Appropriate Physiotherapy Occupational Therapy or professional qualification e.g. MCSP/ BSc or MSc. E


• Registration with Health Care Professions Council E


• CSP/RCOT or equivalent professional registration E


• Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non-clinical continued professional development within own speciality, e.g. post registration training, management / Leadership competencies and evidence of a detailed personal development portfolio E


• Working at "M" level as demonstrated by ongoing CPD/Post registration MSc E


• Relevant, accredited, postgraduate education / courses pertinent to Upper Limb Therapy E, Member of relevant professional clinical interest group (BAHT / BESS / MACP etc.)


• Attended student educator course, Significant post registration experience of which considerable experience has been in this specialty in an acute NHS organisation E


• Experience of staff management including supervision and of development and performance management of staff. E


• Significant experience in education and clinical training of others. E


• Some experience of clinical/service evaluation E


• Advanced knowledge and skills in the specialist assessment and treatment of a wide range of complex acute and chronic clinical presentations relating to older adult patients. E


• Excellent knowledge of anatomy and physiology E


• Good understanding of IT systems and its application to clinical practice. E


• Able to demonstrate the ability to select and apply a wide range of treatment options for a range of clinical presentations E


• Awareness of current evidence in Upper Limb Therapy care and application to clinical practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills E


• Good understanding of IT and its application. E


• Significant experience in the development and performance management of physiotherapists/occupational therapists and students E, Good knowledge and application of all areas of Clinical Governance including Quality, Audit and Risk management D


• Understands the legal responsibilities of the profession D


• Good understanding of principles of data and statistics and experience of their use in evaluation of service delivery D


• Knowledge and understanding of the research process. D


• Teaching experience to uni and multi-professional groups with evidence of ability to deliver high quality presentations D


• Experience of conducting / reporting of research studies D, Strong sense of professional integrity, and compliance with Trust vision and values. E


• Ability to be self-motivated and to motivate team. E


• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills E
