Full Job Description

The Materials Science function is a team of experts within GSK's Global Supply Chain (GSC) MSAT (Manufacturing Science & Technology) division, which provides critical support, at pace, to GSK and third-party manufacturing sites for established products and new product introduction (NPI). Key projects are aligned to material changes, Technical Transfers, NPI milestones and investigations (including rapid resolution of business-critical supply issues). The Materials Science team is part of a wider Global MSAT Analytical team which covers small and large molecule medicines, and vaccines., As the Particle Science Lead (reporting to the Head of Materials Science) you will manage business-critical Materials Science projects across dosage forms and throughout the product lifecycle (from late phase NPI assets prior to launch, through to established commercial assets) and provide technical leadership and support to the business. You will be mostly focussed on work associated with small molecule medicines (but flexibility is required to cover large molecule and vaccine products as per business needs).

You will apply technical expertise in primary manufacturing unit operations (specifically API crystallisation, isolation, drying and particle size reduction) to control and understand key aligned physical properties of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), including solid state derived from the primary process. You will also provide critical support to material change assessments and implementation, Technical Transfers, investigations and NPI milestones. Your expertise will extend to providing training and guidance to the wider MSAT team as well as the provision of subject matter expertise to oversee risk-based data-driven decision making for GSK products.,

  • Apply deep technical knowledge on API particle formation and isolation processes (e.g. crystallisation, isolation, drying and onward particle size reduction) to support development and manufacturing of products (ensuring manufacturability and product quality).

  • Apply Materials Science mechanistic thinking and leverage Particle Science subject matter expertise (including in solid state and physical properties) to troubleshoot and resolve manufacturability and product quality issues that arise.

  • Provide expert support to Technical / Material Risk Assessments for changes at internal and external primary sites (including Technical Transfer processes) and design and execute associated characterisation strategies to support material comparability assessment.

  • Design characterisation strategies with clear rationale and benefits to support business needs and work collaboratively to execute characterisation (with global MSAT Analytical and Materials Science hubs, site-based labs, external contract labs, and R&D).

  • Provide technical expertise (oversight) to method development, optimization and transfers for physical properties testing and regulatory submissions / RTQs.

  • Chair assigned internal governance forums (eg; change control teams and technical review panels)., We believe in an agile working culture for all our roles. If flexibility is important to you, we encourage you to explore with our hiring team what the opportunities are.
