Full Job Description

To be responsible for leading the design and development of all in-house designed mechanical systems for E-Powertrain components and systems. With a relentless drive to ensure class leading design and integration specification and on-time delivery to achieve vehicle attributes for hybrid and electric vehicles on AML programs., As Mechanical Design Manager, you will take the E=Powertrain strategy and put in place plans short to mid-term plans to deliver the following activities:

  • People Management of team

  • Lead the in-house mechanical design, development and integration of industry leading E-Powertrain components from concept through to production:

  • + Including but not limited to:
    o HV Batteries
    o EDU Systems
    o Power Electronics
  • Lead the team to develop multiple design solution options for evaluation to enable trade-off between various component attributes and their impact on the E-Powertrain system and overall vehicle performance

  • Ensure the team efficiently track and manage all component changes with robust revision control

  • Develop relationships with key external suppliers and technology providers and bring best practice and innovation to ensure AML is at the forefront of technology when delivering E-Powertrain systems. Use these relationships, along with self-acquired competitor benchmark evaluations to advise and support senior leaders to develop and execute the future roadmap strategy for E-Powertrain systems Lead the authoring of design rules and Virtual verification and validation standards for best practice Mechanical E-Powertrain design and development with AML, including but not limited to:

  • + Design: Electromagnetic, Thermal, Mechanical, NVH
    + Analysis: 1D, 3D, Physical
    + Verification and Validation: Virtual (1D, 3D, AR/VR) and Physical (Component, Sub-system, System, Vehicle)
  • Understanding the longer-term strategic plan for E-Powertrain, with the Senior Manager plan resource forecasting for future years and programs and recruit additional heads where required to ensure robust delivery

  • Engage and collaborate with wider AML teams and external suppliers to deliver E-Powertrain Components:


  • Work with Principal Engineers and VLMs to ensure E-Powertrain components are delivered on time and to cost and quality targets within the Mission Gateway objectives

  • Ensure robust System Design Specification to define system functional targets; establish regular design reviews with cross functional teams;

  • Deliver high quality 3D CAD and 2D Drawings to achieve static & dynamic clearance targets, negotiate component change in other AML R&D departments if required to achieve clearances. Ensure all component designs meet requirements for Design for Manufacture, Assembly & Service

  • Identify & contain potential quality concerns using engineering quality tools and systems (FMEAs, Robustness Studies)

  • Support Test & Development team with DVP planning & execution & ensure supplier tests are completed on time.

  • Present status at Gateways and support E-Powertrain design reviews, AML Package meetings & SET Group meetings


  • Work cross-functionally with other R&D departments to define EDU mechanical systems balancing characteristics to achieve vehicle requirements for minimum cost

  • Support control strategy definition for the mechanical systems within the EDU

  • Support all Virtual Verification activities, including packaging, 1D & 3D analyses

  • Coordinate system and supplier comparison studies and evaluate RFQ responses to influence management decisions

  • Resolve engineering Concerns (using eCMS) in a timely fashion.

  • Support Intellectual Property (IP) team to protect AML generated IP

    Delivery of E-Powertrain mechanical systems for hybrid and/or electric vehicles

  • Deep technical knowledge of delivering Mechanical systems including transmissions, housings, battery enclosures

  • Leadership of product development projects from concept to production including supplier management

  • Excellent automotive powertrain mechanical integration knowledge

  • Management of small teams of highly dynamic engineers delivering cutting edge technologies Hands on experience of working with automotive High Voltage EDU systems

  • Experience of delivering E-Powertrain commodities from early R&D to series production through an automotive product creation system

  • Knowledge of all relevant vehicle legislation and certification requirements for automotive EDU systems

  • Understanding of hybrid and electric powertrain system functionalities and attributes at vehicle, system and component levels

  • Understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of different EDU, Battery and E-Powertrian layouts

  • Use of test equipment to support mechanical system testing

  • Experience with CAD (NX, CATIA)

  • Responsibility in Formula Student/SAE team

  • Engineering Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic and/or related field

  • High Voltage Live Working Qualification
