Full Job Description

Are you an experienced theatre performer? Do you love working with children and have a passion for books? Then we'd love to hear from you! We're on the hunt for an extraordinary individual to join our award-winning children's book company, based in Leicester.

  • Your role will be to bring our book characters to life in classrooms across the county, following a guided lesson plan (provided)

  • This project is aimed only at Primary School aged children, and you could visit Early Years, Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2

  • You will be required to read out the story, dress up as the main character (head to toe costume provided) and engage the children

  • It is possible that you may work with another performer as a duo, this is an aspect to be considered depending on the applications we receive

  • The main focus of the schools will be in Leicester and Leicestershire but could extend to cover the whole of the East Midlands so the ability to be able to travel is essential

  • How does it work with the schools?

Working directly with schools and young children (from early years up to key stage two), you will help to deliver an experience like no other! Based on our popular book series, your performances will help children engage with books, become captivated by the characters and develop a lifelong love for reading. After all, reading is about pleasure and that is where this unique opportunity comes in!
  • Books2Door will provide the lesson plan and structure, working closely with schools to support the National Curriculum and Literacy Framework for each age group. We will provide you with a DBS check and everything you need to to fulfil this role.

  • The lesson will be approximately one hour which allows this role to cover at least 2 schools in a day (one in the morning, one in the afternoon)

  • The hour will be the 'Literacy Hour', working alongside the National Curriculum and teachers (other members of the team will manage this but you will be included)

  • You will need to have a calm, patient and fun manner. However, teachers will be present to ensure children are listening. You will also have the support of 2 in-house teachers within the company

Experience in the theatre and arts

  • A love for books!

  • Working with children

  • Permission to be photographed and filmed

  • Full UK driving licence (preferred, although transport can be provided for school visits)

  • Clean DBS check (provided by B2D)

Job Frequency - Freelance basis (paid on a day rate) / Ongoing work. Half day (one school), full day (two schools), Job Types: Part-time, Temporary contract, Temp to perm, Freelance, Zero hours contract

  • Pay: From £24,000.00 per year
